Physiotherapy focuses on diagnosing, treating, and preventing movement-related conditions. It helps patients recover from injuries, illnesses, or surgeries, and improve overall physical function.
Treatment includes manual therapy (such as massage and joint mobilisations), exercise programmes to build strength and flexibility, and shockwave therapy for chronic pain or soft tissue injuries.
You might see a physiotherapist for conditions such as musculoskeletal pain, neurological disorders, cardiopulmonary and respiratory issues, women's health and pelvic concerns, as well as orthopaedic and post-surgical recovery.
Physiotherapists specialise in managing recovery from surgery, injury, and chronic conditions, using evidence-based techniques.
Both terms are often used interchangeably. “Physiotherapist” is more common in the UK, while “physical therapist” is the preferred term in the US.
Both provide similar care focused on restoring movement and function. European physiotherapists are primary care practitioners who can assess, diagnose, and treat patients without a doctor’s referral. They have the authority to order diagnostic tests and can prescribe medication, as well as refer patients to specialists.
However, in the US physical therapists usually require a doctor’s referral before starting treatment.
As a general rule, it’s best to start managing an injury as soon as possible. The sooner you begin, the quicker and more successful your recovery is likely to be. If you haven't regained full activity within 2 weeks, we recommend seeing a physiotherapist for an assessment, prognosis, and management plan.
Mostly yes. If you are recovering from surgery, then this is likely no. However, if you are post-injury, then your physio will assess and discuss the management parameters around your recovery.
To start with, there are different types of arthritis. The symptoms and severity of each can vary. Through a comprehensive assessment, a Physiotherapist will rule out any serious pathologies that would need a referral to a more specialist clinician. Through this process, the Physiotherapist can highlight if an onward referral is needed, but to fully diagnose Arthritis, imaging and blood tests are needed.
Physiotherapists take a clinical, evidence-based approach, focusing on movement, function, and pain management through tailored rehab plans.
Osteopaths focus on the body’s structure and alignment, using hands-on techniques to address imbalances.
Chiropractors specialise in spinal adjustments and nervous system function, primarily treating back and neck pain.
