What Is Osteoporosis?

If you’ve fractured your hip, wrist, or spine following a seemingly minor injury, consider seeing an orthopaedic surgeon or rheumatologist about the possibility of osteoporosis.

The term “osteoporosis” literally means “porous bone.” It generally refers to a condition of abnormally low bone density, resulting in weak, brittle bones highly susceptible to fractures. It occurs when the body loses too much bone or makes very little bone.

To the naked eye, bones appear dense and solid. But most of what we see as bone is actually made up of spongy or cancellous tissue. When viewed under a microscope, healthy bone tissue has an irregular honeycomb structure forming a dense, intricate mesh of calcified fibres. In bones with osteoporosis, the holes in the mesh appear larger and the links between them thinner. There may even be more empty space than bone.

Osteoporosis can also occur when there’s abnormal bone formation. For instance, if the bone structure is off, the overall bone density and strength may be compromised.
