When Is Gallbladder Removal Necessary?

Doctors often perform a cholecystectomy to treat gallstone issues and associated complications.

Your healthcare team might suggest this surgical procedure if you:

  • Experience pain or discomfort from gallstones within the gallbladder, a condition known as cholelithiasis

  • Live with cholecystitis, where gallstones inflame the gallbladder, leading to recurrent pain and possible infection

  • Have gallstones in the bile duct, causing obstruction and jaundice, referred to as choledocholithiasis

  • Have large gallbladder polyps that may develop into cancer

  • Have pancreatitis caused by the presence of gallstones

  • Show symptoms or test results indicating the possibility of gallbladder cancer

  • Have a motility disorder of the gallbladder called Dyskinesia

In these cases, undergoing a cholecystectomy can mitigate symptoms and safeguard against future health issues.
