What Is The Circumcision Procedure Like?

Adult circumcision is a straightforward surgery that typically does not require an overnight stay.

Before the procedure, you will get either local or general anaesthesia to numb the area and minimise discomfort. The choice of anaesthesia depends on the patient's preference, the surgeon's recommendation, and the complexity of the circumcision.

Once the anaesthesia takes effect, the urologist surgeon will carefully separate the foreskin from the head (glans) of the penis. Once this is done, any bleeding vessels are cauterised or stitched. Depending on the method, the urologist surgeon may close the wound with dissolvable stitches or leave it open to healing naturally.

How Long Is The Recovery After Circumcision?

The recovery period after circumcision can vary depending on the individual's age, the method used, and how well they follow post-operative care instructions. Infants typically heal relatively quickly, usually within about one to two weeks. Adult recovery might take longer, ranging from a few weeks to a month or more. Pain, swelling, and discomfort are common immediately after the procedure but tend to subside gradually.

It’s important to follow the urologist’s instructions, such as keeping the area clean, applying Vaseline, caring for the dressing, and avoiding sexual activity or vigorous exercise during the healing period.

Taking time off work or regular activities during the initial recovery phase is advisable to allow proper healing.

It's essential to watch for signs of infection, such as increased redness, swelling, or discharge, and seek medical attention if any concerns arise.
