Bursitis - Symptoms & Causes

Bursitis is a condition that inflames the bursa, a fluid-filled sac that cushions bones, tendons, and muscles near your joints. This inflammation can cause pain, swelling, and stiffness. Bursitis can occur in almost any joint, but it's most common in the shoulder, elbow, hip, knee, and ankle.

What Are The Symptoms of Bursitis?

The most common symptoms of bursitis include pain (more like a dull ache), swelling, and tenderness in the affected joint. The pain may worsen with movement or pressure on the affected area. There may be a limited range of motion in the inflamed joint and sometimes the skin around the area may appear red and feel warmer to touch. You can refer yourself to our team of orthopaedic surgeons if the pain interferes with your daily activities and affects your sleep.

Causes of bursitis

Bursitis can happen for various reasons, such as:

Repetitive use

Overuse or repetitive motion of the joint can irritate the bursa, leading to inflammation. This often occurs in people who engage in activities that require repetitive movement such as sports (e.g.: tennis, baseball), gardening, carpentry, painting, etc.

Constant pressure

Constantly adding pressure on a joint can also lead to inflammation of the bursa. This can happen to people who walk in heels a lot, spend a lot of time on their knees or rest their elbows on the table.

Injury or trauma

Direct trauma or injury to a joint can cause bursitis. This can result from a fall, impact, or other forms of physical injury.

Infection

In some cases, bursitis can be caused by an infection within the bursa. This is less common but may occur if bacteria enter the bursa, leading to inflammation.

Health conditions

People with autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, gout or conditions like diabetes or thyroid disease, are more prone to developing bursitis.
