How Does Autism Diagnosis Work?

ASD symptoms often emerge in early childhood, and parents are typically the first to notice developmental differences in their children. From there, the diagnostic journey is vital for pinpointing specific needs and determining tailored interventions.

Early Detection

ASD can typically be reliably diagnosed by the age of 2. The early detection of autism is crucial, leading to interventions that can significantly aid the child’s development. Although symptoms vary, they often present unique patterns that trained professionals can identify.

Diagnosis in Children: A Two-Stage Process:

Stage 1: General Developmental Screening

Every child undergoes developmental screening during well-being checkups. Paediatricians and early childhood health care providers are trained to observe developmental milestones. Specific autism screenings at the 18- and 24-month visits are also key.

Parents’ observations and concerns form a central part of this screening. Children displaying developmental or behavioural differences are referred for an additional evaluation.

Stage 2: In-depth Diagnostic Evaluation

A team of specialists conducts a comprehensive evaluation to diagnose ASD accurately. The team, including child neurologists, psychologists, and speech-language pathologists, considers various aspects, such as:

  • Medical and neurological examinations

  • Cognitive and language abilities assessments

  • Behavioural observations

  • Detailed conversations with caregivers about the child’s development and behaviour

Blood tests and hearing tests may also be conducted to provide a holistic understanding of the child’s health and development.

Diagnosis in Older Children & Adolescents

Teachers and caregivers may identify ASD symptoms in school-going children. The school’s special education team evaluates the child, and additional assessments may be conducted by healthcare providers specialising in ASD.

Diagnosis in Adults

Diagnosing ASD in adults can be complex due to the overlap of symptoms with other mental health disorders. Adults noticing signs of ASD should consult a healthcare provider experienced in ASD evaluation.

Consultations with family members and caregivers provide insights into early developmental history, ensuring an accurate diagnosis.

The Importance of Early & Accurate Diagnosis

Receiving a correct ASD diagnosis, whether in childhood or adulthood, is a gateway to understanding an individual’s unique challenges and strengths. It illuminates the path to tailored treatments and therapies, fostering enhanced well-being and community integration for those with autism.
