Mr Kapila Shanka Benaragama

Mr Shanka Benaragama is a Consultant Vascular and Endovascular Surgeon at the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust and University College London Hospitals (UCLH) NHS Trust, and an Honorary Associate Professor at University College London (UCL) Medical School. He completed higher surgical training in General, Transplant, Plastics and Vascular Surgery across Oxford, London and Cambridge, with clinical placements at the Royal Free Hospital, UCLH, Wexham Park Hospital and Addenbrooke's Hospital. He subsequently completed the prestigious National Lower Limb Salvage Fellowship (VaLSA) in the UK. Alongside his clinical practice, Mr Benaragama has developed significant expertise in medical leadership, management and quality improvement. He successfully completed the Management and Leadership Resident Programme at the University of Cambridge Judge Business School, an intensive programme equivalent in scope to an MBA. He is also a course director for numerous NHS management, leadership and quality improvement programmes. Mr Benaragama leads one of the largest specialist hyperhidrosis services in North London, with a particular focus on service innovation and the development of specialist treatment pathways. In recognition of his clinical expertise and leadership in this field, he was selected as a clinical expert on the technical appraisal committee for hyperhidrosis treatment modalities at the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE). He has a specialist interest in complex carotid surgery and is one of only two vascular surgeons in North Central London performing complex carotid surgical interventions. He has also contributed to the development of his vascular unit into a top-10 UK vascular centre for procedural excellence and patient outcomes, as recognised through National Vascular Registry (NVR) data. His career combines advanced vascular and endovascular surgical expertise with a strong commitment to clinical innovation, service development, education, leadership, quality improvement and patient outcomes.
