Mr Fitzgerald O’Connor completed his graduate medical degree at St George’s University of London where he qualified with Merit awards. Subsequently Edmund was awarded a prestigious academic surgery training post, only 1 of 4 across greater London. Following his basic surgical training he then ranked 1st out of 275 trainees for higher surgical training with the Pan Thames Plastic Surgery training program (London). At the end of his training Mr Fitzgerald O’Connor undertook a microsurgical fellowship at the Royal London hospital followed by an international fellowship at the Royal Perth hospital in Western Australia.
During his time in Australia he gained valuable experience in complex trauma reconstruction, peripheral nerve repair, breast cancer reconstruction and skin cancer surgery. Edmund was then appointed as a consultant plastic surgeon at the Royal Perth before returning to London to take up his current consultant post, helping to develop the trauma reconstruction service at King’s College Hospital’s major trauma centre.
Mr Fitzgerald O’Connor is passionate about teaching and research. Alongside his academic position at Queen Mary’s university of London he has published over 30 peer review articles and presented in over 50 international conferences.
Mr Fitzgerald O’Connor focuses on providing the very best quality of care for each of his patients by maximising the outcomes from every operation he does, providing the safest patient journey and the best possible experience for each patient. Edmund is one of only a handful of consultants in London employed at 2 university teaching hospitals.
At King’s College Hospital, the leading major trauma centre in the country, Edmund specialises in complex trauma reconstruction as part of the orthoplastic team. At Guys & St Thomas’ Hospital as part of the world-renowned plastic surgery department, Edmund focuses on complex revisional reconstructive surgery for both upper and lower limb, breast cancer and a broad range of general plastics surgery cases. He is also one of the only reconstructive surgeons in the country who deals with diabetic foot reconstruction
Mr Fitzgerald O’Connor also holds a substantive Senior Clinical Lecturer position at Queen Mary’s University of London. He is the course lead for the Masters programme in Reconstructive Microsurgery as well as faculty for the M.Sc in Aesthetic Medicine.
