Dr Charis Khoo is an Anaesthetic Consultant at King’s College Hospital with a sub-specialty in Paediatric Anaesthesia. Her previous practice was as a Consultant in Paediatric Anaesthesia at KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital (KKH), Singapore. She graduated from the University of Melbourne and is a Fellow of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists. She has been in consultant practice since 2017 and received her CESR (UK) in 2024.
She has a special interest in paediatric neuroanaesthesia and was involved in the first Auditory Brainstem Implant procedure conducted in South-East-Asia at KKH, where she was also involved in validating the use of EEG monitoring (Massimo, SedLine) in a paediatric population.
Her clinical experience includes paediatric pain medicine. As a consultant with the Children’s Pain Service (KKH), she dealt with cases such as acute post-surgical pain, cancer pain, and complex sedation weaning.
Having an interest in acute medicine, she previously worked with the Singapore Rugby Union, providing immediate pitchside care for players at the HSBC 7s. This involved practicing ATLS principles, management of airway, cervical spine, and concussion injury. To extend her experience in immediate care and transport medicine, she completed a term as a fellow with the Children’s Acute Transport Service (CATS) at Great Ormond Street Hospital.
As a passionate educator, she supports medical students at King’s College London in her role as an Educational Supervisor and regular OSCE examiner. She also helps anaesthetic trainees with their exam preparation, in the form of tutorials, vivas and lectures, and for 4 years she was an invited lecturer for the Masters of Anaesthesia Exam Preparatory Course in Singapore. She was also involved in a mission/teaching initiative between KKH paediatric surgery and Port Moresby General Hospital in Papua New Guinea, travelling to PNG to conduct anaesthesia for major paediatric surgery cases such as Posterior Ano-Rectal Saggital Pullthroughs.
With an interest in smoothening the pre-operative process for patients, she has conducted a meta-analysis to determine if Thromboelastography (TEG), a quick bedside test, can be used to determine bleeding risk in haematology-oncology patients coming for surgical procedures. She also worked with a company in Singapore to package carbohydrate fluid sachets that is safe for all children including neonates, as part of a quality improvement initiative at KKH to reduce caloric fasting time for preoperative patients. She is currently involved in mentoring young doctors through their own audit projects at KCH.
Outside of work, Charis is a team player and enjoys team sport in the form of Ultimate Frisbee and loves hiking with her dog. She pursues an active lifestyle, and reads avidly, because she believes that a healthy and happy body and mind is the cornerstone of being a good physician.
