FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Once you have been admitted to our ward, our team will administer general anaesthic before we begin your knee replacement surgery.    During your procedure, Dr Paul Culpan will begin by bending the knee to 90 degrees, then making an incision down the center of the knee about 8 to 10 inches long, cutting through the deeper tissue.   Dr Paul Culpan will then use a bone saw to remove the arthritically damaged areas at the bottom of the femur as well as the top of the tibia. Precision is very important, so each bone is reshaped to exactly fit its new prosthesis. A flexible cushion is attached on top of the new tibia, usually made from polyethylene. The leg is then extended and flexed for testing, making sure the range of movement is correct. Repair will be done to any deep tissue performed during the surgery. Then finally, Dr Paul Culpan will stitch up the skin at the incision.
The procedure usually takes between 1-3 hours, and you will be expected to stay in hospital for up to 3-5 days for recovery.
The main way that you can prepare for your knee replacement surgery would be to get ready for post surgery at home. We recommend that you reach out to loved ones who may be able to assist you after your procedure to do mundane tasks such as get the shopping and washing etc. After your surgery, for the following few weeks, you will be needing either a walker or crutches to aid your mobility. We recommend installing hand rails into your home to make it easier for you to carry on your daily tasks at home.
Although you will most likely experience discomfort after your surgery, most patients will feel hardly any pain within 6 weeks. However, it may take uo to 3 months for pain and swelling to settle down.
Depending on your occupation, it is advised that you allow for 6-12 weeks off work. Those who have a desk job will most likely be able to go back before those with manual labour jobs.
