Job Summary


This post is for a Consultant Clinical Scientist Microbiology (Clinical Scientist in microbiology with Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists by examination or equivalent) to work within an evolving Infection Service based in the Department of Pathology at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (LTHTR).


The Microbiology clinical team consist of 5.9 wte Consultant Medical Microbiologist/Consultant Clinical Scientist (including this post), 1 Combined Infection trainee, 1 Senior clinical fellow and 2 Higher Specialist Scientific Training (HSST) programme trainees (1 in Bacteriology and 1 in virology).


Main duties of the job


The job focuses on the clinical infection consultation and antibiotic stewardship elements of the service; however, there is also the opportunity to take on leadership roles in negotiation with colleagues. They will provide clinical and scientific advice to clinicians, other staff within the Trust and the wider health community (e.g. staff from other laboratories, clinical staff, managers, GPs and community nurses) regarding microbiological investigations, their interpretation and appropriate therapy and provide expertise to support Infection Prevention and Control in LTHTR.

They will provide clinical and scientific advice to clinicians, other staff within the Trust and the wider health community (e.g. staff from other laboratories, clinical staff, managers, GPs and community nurses) regarding microbiological investigations, their interpretation and appropriate therapy and provide expertise to support Infection Prevention and Control in LTHTR.


The post holder will bring clinical and scientific expertise and strategic direction to the Microbiology Department and will contribute to the expansion and development of practice, the implementation of Clinical Governance, and the delivery of improved outcomes. The post holder will provide consultant and specialist advice to clinical and scientific staff within the Trust, Primary Care, the North West Region and Nationally.

Person Specification


  • Honours degree in relevant science;

  • Postgraduate qualification in a relevant area;

  • Relevant PhD or Doctorate (level 8);

  • Registration with Health and Care Professions Council as a Clinical Scientist;

  • Completion of Higher Specialist Scientific Training (HSST) in microbiology or equivalent;

  • Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists (Microbiology) by examination;

  • Knowledge and Experience;

  • Essential;

  • A high level of clinical experience and competence in the management of Infection and laboratory liaison;

  • Advanced theoretical and practical knowledge and experience in clinical microbiology;

  • Wide-ranging practical experience in manual & automated techniques used in clinical microbiology laboratories;

  • Experience in the interpretation of a wide range of microbiology results.;

  • Experience in audit, research & development, and improving clinical and laboratory practice;

  • Experience in presenting complex scientific data to groups of staff;

  • Desirable;

  • Experience in supervising others and managing specialised areas of a microbiology department.
