Epilepsy - Diagnosis & Treatment

Epilepsy is a neurological condition that affects millions of people worldwide. It's characterised by recurrent seizures, which are brief episodes of involuntary movement, abnormal sensations, or altered consciousness. Seizures can vary greatly from person to person, and some people may also experience changes in mood or behaviour before or after a seizure.

Diagnosing Epilepsy

Not every seizure is an indication of epilepsy. A clinical epilepsy diagnosis is the only way to ascertain an epilepsy case. The doctor or neurologist may diagnose you with epilepsy if you’ve had at least two unprovoked seizures within 24 hours or one unprovoked seizure with a high risk of more.

Epilepsy is diagnosed in one (or a combination) of the following ways:

  • Evaluation of your medical history

  • Neuropsychological exam

  • Electroencephalogram (EEG) scan

  • Brain imaging tests (CT, CAT, or MRI scan)

  • Genetic testing

Epilepsy Treatment

If you’ve been diagnosed with epilepsy, proper treatment can minimise the number and frequency of seizures or, better yet, stop the seizures altogether. Treatment options for epilepsy largely depend on the cause of the seizures and their associated symptoms.

Epilepsy is treated in three main ways:

  • Medications.

Anti-epilepsy drugs inhibit seizures or lessen the severity of symptoms. Many people with epilepsy live seizure-free by simply sticking to a medication regimen.

  • Surgery.

A neurosurgeon can opt to remove a small portion of brain tissue if the seizures are localised in a small, well-defined area of the brain. Seizure-causing brain tumours can also be removed surgically.

  • Therapies.

Vagus nerve stimulation, deep brain stimulation, and responsive neurostimulation therapies can be administered as complementary or alternative epilepsy treatments to medication or surgery.

For any epilepsy treatment to be effective, it must be highly personalised—administered to meet each patient’s specific needs. That’s precisely what we do at our London clinic. Our team of expert doctors and neurologists will design a personalised treatment plan specific to your condition and desired outcome. You’ll also get professional guidance on living a happy, healthy, and productive life with epilepsy.
